Restoration of Cullen Auld Kirk

Update

Thank you to everyone who attended the Public Meeting on the future of The Auld Kirk on Tuesday 4th April 2017.
The Kirk Session of Cullen and Deskford Parish Church met on Saturday 6th May 2017 in the Hall Church to decide how we are going to move forward in relation to the Auld Kirk.

The three main options open to us were:

A - Do the necessary work on an 'as and when' basis, just to keep the Kirk safe, warm, wind and water tight. (Finance – as and when we can afford it)
B - Combine all the necessary work required into one big job including upgrading The Kirk and keeping it as a place of Worship. (Finance = Fundraising plus applying to external Fundraising Bodies for Financial assistance amounting to approximately £300,000)
C - Refurbishment as in B above plus adding a disabled toilet, lift and staircase into the North Aisle space and altering the Gallery by lowering the floors and creating a working area/meeting room for use by the Community as well as the Congregation. (Finance = Fundraising plus applying to external Fundraising Bodies for Financial assistance amounting to £600,000)

The Kirk Session had a discussion taking into account the points put forward at the Public Meeting and by email, and voted the best way forward for the future of The Auld Kirk was to proceed with Option B.

The Session will now start to gather the necessary figures for the Restoration work which needs to be carried out and will include the following:

  • Changing the heating system by upgrading the oil fired boiler
  • Restoring the Bell Tower
  • Re-pointing the external walls of the Building
  • Upgrading the Toilet in the Vestry to a Disabled Toilet
  • Removing one pew from the front of the West Aisle to provide more room for Wedding Parties, Funerals, etc.
  • Taking out the majority of the pews at the back of the ground floor of the North Aisle to provide a small visitor centre/visitor friendly space to give a better all round visitor experience
  • Possibly adding a glass partition to separate the visitor area from the rest of the Kirk

  • A Restoration Fund was set up last year for anyone wishing to contribute to the future of The Auld Kirk, either by a one off payment or a monthly standing order can contact Sheila Sellar, Treasurer, or any Elder for more information. We will be setting up a 'Just Text Giving' and all information on how to Donate will be available on our Website and Facebook Page.

The Kirk Session will meet again and start to gather the relevant figures and start the Fund Raising process in earnest. We will also start the process of sourcing builders and tradesmen from the local area and further afield to carry out the required work. Bearing in mind that the Auld Kirk is a Grade A listed building we need to ensure that the work is done in a professional manner which will last for the next 100 years!
